Generating Solar Power
About this project
Mitchell’s Plain is a South African suburb originally built by the apartheid government in the 1970s to house victims of forced removals in the City of Cape Town. Today, in post-apartheid South Africa, Mitchelle’s Plain has grown into a diverse, bustling community and faces an urgent need for safe, affordable housing.
Watergate Apartments, located within Watergate Estate, is a first-of-a-kind development built to address this need. The complex is designed with the utmost regard for the safety, quality of life and community-oriented living of its residents. It includes state-of-the-art security, communal gardens, children’s play areas and easy access to public transport. The mixed-use project includes 897 homes as well as a thriving retail complex.
Impact and benefits
This is a unique social impact opportunity as the first Sun Exchange solar project powering an affordable housing complex.
The developer’s desire to install solar is driven by the vision of making Watergate Estate a model of sustainable urban living that inspires pride among residents, as well as a desire to reduce energy costs and relay savings to the families and individuals who inhabit the complex.
