Generating Solar Power
About this project
We’re solar powering KwaDukuza’s ‘uShaka Mall’ located in KwaZulu Natal, a South African province known for its fertile lands and vibrant history - the land of the Zulu.
The region's sugarcane and supporting industry serves a large portion of the job market. However, huge areas of land are now fallow due to monoculture, leaving many labourers without jobs. Drought exaggerated by a changing climate is introducing further instability to the farming industry.
uShaka Mall is of one of KwaZulu-Natal’s largest retail properties of around 8,700sqm. The mall is 95% occupied and includes a strong mix of stable tenants including Clicks, Telkom, Cell C as well as anchor tenant, Pick n Pay.
Impact and benefits
The KwaDukuza municipality has set an agenda to ‘Go Green by 2030’ but struggles with ageing infrastructure and high unemployment. This project assists their green vision by boosting their low-carbon economy, climate resilience and creates new employment opportunities and solar skills development.
You can choose to donate any proportion of your income earned from leasing solar cells to uShaka Mall to the Fire Protection Association of the Overberg. All monies raised will be used to support fighting increasingly overwhelming wildfires in a warming world.
